Maya arrived able to factor a quadratic when the leading coefficient is one, and stuck the moment it is not. We worked through six problems of the harder kind, slowly, and found the actual gap: she was guessing factor pairs rather than splitting the middle term, so a problem that did not resolve in two guesses turned into a dead end. We wrote out the splitting method as four steps and she used it unaided on the last three problems. She also asked, unprompted, why the method works, which is the first time she has asked that in these sessions.
- Factoring quadratics where the leading coefficient is greater than one, by splitting the middle term.
- Checking a factorisation by expanding it back, every time, before moving on.
- Two questions from last week's quiz that she lost marks on for method rather than for arithmetic.
- Practice set four, problems one to twelve, using the four steps rather than guessing.
- Time herself on five problems, ten minutes, and bring the ones she could not finish.
- Redo the two quiz questions we went through, from a blank page.
Start the next session with the timed set she brings back. If the four steps hold under time pressure, move on to solving by completing the square. If they do not, spend the first twenty minutes there rather than adding anything new.
