Compare

Otter.ai against Fathom.

Otter.ai is a transcription product with summaries above it, capped by monthly minutes on the free tier. Fathom is a meeting assistant with unlimited free recordings and CRM sync on paid plans. Both are for the host, not the client.

Slide Practice wrote this page and makes neither of these two products, which is the only reason it can be written without a thumb on the scale. Everything said here about another product was read off that product's own public pages as of September 2026. No competitor's exact price appears anywhere on this site, because prices change and a stale number is worse than none.

01What each one is for

Two products, two jobs, stated plainly.

Otter.ai

Anybody whose first need is an accurate, searchable transcript rather than a summary.

How it is priced A free tier with a monthly transcription minute cap, then per user per month plans with larger recording allowances.

Its own pricing page

Fathom

A team that wants every call summarised, actioned and written back into a CRM without anybody typing.

How it is priced A free tier with unlimited recordings and summaries, then team plans per user per month with a two user minimum.

Its own pricing page

Slide Practice makes neither, and the comparison is worth writing because the two are close enough that most people pick on the free tier and then discover the difference six weeks later. The useful question is whether you want the words or the actions, because each product treats one as primary and the other as a supporting feature.

02Where Otter.ai wins

Three things Otter.ai does better.

  • Transcription depth. Speaker identification, multi language support and search across every meeting are named on its own pricing page.
  • It has been doing this longer and the transcript itself is the product rather than a by product of the summary.
  • Mobile and desktop apps mean it records a conversation in a room, not only a call, which a meeting assistant built around video calls does not.

03Where Fathom wins

Three things Fathom does better.

  • The free tier offers unlimited recordings and instant summaries on its own pricing page, which is a stronger free offer than a capped minute allowance.
  • CRM field sync and deal summaries on the higher plans do work a transcription tool leaves to a person.
  • A capture mode that does not put a bot in the meeting, which removes the most common objection a client raises.

04What neither of them does

What neither of these two products does.

Neither of them produces a document written for a client rather than for the person who ran the meeting. That is a different job and it is the one Slide Practice does.

05The short answer

If you only read one paragraph, read this one.

If you need the exact words, in a room as well as on a call, and you search them later: Otter. If you need the outcomes of a call pushed into a system and you live in a CRM: Fathom, and its free tier is the stronger of the two.
